Cadence + Complexity is an intermodal art production through graduate studies at the Expression Arts Institute, San Diego, CA + European Graduate School, Saas Fee, CH; inspired by the academic opportunity to make art with hundreds of people (refugees, asylum seekers, chronic pain patients, folks diagnosed with schizophrenia, folks detoxing from substance abuse, folks affected by the US prison system, folks affected by homelessness, vets, artists, and non-artists, men, women, teens, children, heterosexual, LGBTQ, folks different + alike) as a social practice artist, using the creative art process as a way of exploring the concepts we humans commonly face: self-identity, community, interrelatedness, and resilience. It is within this process of co-creating where I became a painter and contemplative photographer. My thesis is in process. Michelle Josey, 2018.

PAINTINGS

The Guardians

Acrylic painting series developed from art-based research of relationships in living systems; inspired through the concepts of Complexity Theory, Chaos Theory, and Deep Ecology.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Breaking Patterns

A fine art photography series guided from the direction of five participatory art sessions with seven participants. It is an exploration in the intersections of self awareness, memory, reflection, imagination, emotion, and change; sensing relationship with self, other, material, image and context.

MUSIC

Blue Cadence

A compilation of songs uniquely composed of original acoustic guitar melodies, poetically showered with metaphors inspired by life as an ocean of unpredictable currents. Interwoven with nature sounds recorded from travels in the USA and abroad, and intense piano expressions reminiscent of Philip Glass. This album emerged within the visual art productions of Cadence + Complexity.
